The Story of White Widow

For every highly regarded strain of cannabis, there are always at least two different stories for how the strain was created. The story of White Widow is no different. There are two widely regarded stories for how this hugely popular coffeeshop classic came into existence.

De Sjamaan Seeds

One story suggests that the esteemed Dutch breeder Ingemar initiated the creation of White Widow in the late 1980s. The strain was meticulously developed until approximately 1994, gaining recognition in Dutch Coffeeshops. Greenhouse Seeds obtained the White Widow genetics from Ingemar, who had been diligently refining the strain. In 1995, the world was introduced to White Widow as Greenhouse Seeds secured first place at the Amsterdam Cannabis Cup.

The second story holds the widest acceptance, asserting that the White Widow strain was crafted by the renowned breeder Shantibaba during his tenure at Greenhouse Seed Co. Shantibaba currently serves as the main breeder for the esteemed Mr. Nice seedbank, recognized as one of the most reputable seed banks in present operation. Shantibaba's rendition of White Widow, aptly named Black Widow, within the Mr. Nice seeds collection, is widely acclaimed and often regarded as the original iteration.

The White Widow strain was responsible for a whole range of crosses/ variations, which is now known as the White family. As well as White Widow, the white family also has White Rhino, Great White Shark, and El Nino in her ranks, these strains can be found in the Greenhouse Seeds range. 

These crosses are also available from Shantibaba through Mr. Nice seeds, and are called Medicine Man, Shark Shock, and La Niña, respectively.

While the origins of this strain remain a subject of debate regarding its creator and timeline, there is a general consensus that White Widow is an Indica/Sativa hybrid. It comprises a sativa mother hailing from Brazil and an indica hybrid selection meticulously cultivated in Kerala, South India.

Since the emergence of White Widow onto the mid 90’s coffeeshop scene, the face of cannabis breeding has been changed forever. This strains popularity has seen it become the cornerstone of many modern breeding projects. Two great examples of crosses with White Widow, are Serious Seeds - White Russian, and Homegrown Fantaseeds - K2. White Russian by Serious Seeds is a crossing of the two powerhouses, AK-47 and White Widow. While Homegrown Fantaseeds’ K2, is crossing of White Widow and Hindu Kush.
